I’ve been a “snacker” for most of my life. I basically eat every few hours. This is where, I think, I’ve been lucky to already have formed this type of eating habit, since I can remember.
Did you know that healthy snacking can actually help you lose weight? Well, it’s true! If you want to lose weight, you must eat regularly.
Benefits of Eating Regularly
- Maintain stable energy levels
Do you suffer from fatigue? How about that mid-afternoon energy slump? Well, all of those are as a result of not eating regularly. And by doing so, your energy level dips. By having healthy snacks and eating regularly, you will maintain stable energy levels and eliminate that slump.
- Improved concentration levels
Have you ever felt on top of your game when you’ve had nutritious meals and no hunger pangs? Eating regularly has been shown to improve concentration levels so that you’re focused throughout the day.
- Helps to control binge eating
When you’re starving, you’re more likely to choose bad food choices as well as over eat. Hence why regular meal eaters tend to eat fewer calories. Also, when you are starving you are less likely to prepare a healthy meal. Choosing a healthy snack and eating regularly can help you make healthy food choices.
- Helps to keep you feeling satisfied
When you feel satisfied, you’re less likely to crave unhealthy snacks or food options. You won’t even think about wanting a Snickers bar or that bag of chips you saw walking through the aisles of the grocery store.
- Metabolism works efficiently
Most importantly, if you’re eating regularly, your metabolism will be lit. By eating irregularly, your body slows in how it burns calories since starvation signals a flight or fight stress response in your body. Your metabolic rate will slow down and your body will hold on to everything it’s got in order to survive…since you’re not feeding it.
Protecting Muscle Mass
So you’ve spent a lot of time strength training and notice that your body has become more toned. Did you know that in order to maintain muscle mass, you body needs food (in the form of protein)? Therefore, if you go long hours between meals, you body will start using your muscles for energy. Yep, all that hard work…burning away.
During periods of reduced caloric intake (or aka starvation), your body will take protein and fat for energy. Hence why it’s so important to have enough protein in your blood stream so that your body does not take the protein from your muscle tissues. (Check out my post here explaining the importance of protein.)
I’ve come up with a list of healthy snacks for weight loss. These are my go to snacks for in between meals.
I try to eat whole foods when I can, so I’ve tried to include mostly whole foods. However, for most of us, life gets busy at times and we just need something on the go. This is where I try to include quicker, but still healthy, options.
Also, I tend to have some form of protein with every meal/snack. So if you’re having a fruit, pair it with some almonds for protein. And if you’re having carrot or celery sticks, dip it in hummus, a bean dip or even cottage cheese. As well, you could pair dried fruits with nuts like a trail mix.
