Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation based on an individuals height and weight. It is an estimate of body fat. It is a good gauge for diseases that occur from high body fat. The higher your body mass index, the higher your risk of certain diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure (to name a few).

Body Mass Index

This should only be used as an estimate since other factors such as body composition, age and activity level may not provide an accurate result. For example, someone with high muscle mass can have a high BMI because of their muscle mass, but it does not mean that they’re overweight. Also, it may underestimate body fat in older people if they have lost muscle mass. However, for most adults it’s a good calculation to get an idea of healthy weight ranges.

Calculate BMI:

What Does It Mean?

  • Underweight: BMI < 18.5
  • Normal: BMI 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25-29.9
  • Obese: BMI 30 or >

Having an active lifestyle along with a balanced diet is a great start to living a healthy lifestyle. It’s all about consistency! Let’s be accountable for our bodies and take ownership of our health. Remember, success starts with self discipline and consistency is key!
